What is an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner?
Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners (ANCs) are non-partisan, locally elected officials serving as representatives for their neighborhoods to D.C’s local government. A commissioner is elected to serve their district on a greater Advisory Neighborhood Commission – a group of several commissioners that oversee a larger neighborhood. In my case, 2B is the area in and around Dupont Circle.
Though agencies are not required to act based on the recommendations of ANCs, they are supposed to give those recommendations “great weight”. Additionally, District law states that agencies cannot take action to significantly affect a neighborhood without notifying the residing ANC 30 days in advance. These issues include zoning, streets, recreation, education, social services, sanitation, planning, safety, budget, and health services.
